Cyber Charter Schools A model for the 21st Century Cyber education is computer-based learning via the Internet. At the K-12 level, online classes may be offered to students in a traditional school during the school day. In at least 12 states, students may enroll in a full internet-based program offered by a separate cyber charter school . The number of cyber or virtual schools across the country is growing dramatically. Students and their parents are attracted to virtual schools for individual academic, social, and personal reasons. Successful cyber school students, who enjoy the flexibility of attending a school that is “open” 24 hours a day / 365 days, are independent, self-directed learners. Like any charter school, cyber charter schools are free from many state and federal regulations. The school administration and governing board make decisions on teacher employment, curricular offerings, and methods of communication with students who may live nearby, across the state, or the other side of the country. These schools must also provide technical support for student hardware and software that are the basis for students learning and communication. State Departments of Education and local school districts are facing concerns related to the rapid growth of virtual schools. The sharpest controversy relates to funding – the actual cost and the source of funding. Local educators often view cyber schools as unwanted competition for students and for state and federal funds. Despite growing pains and controversies, virtual schools are here to stay. As the current problems are solved, more students will find the education they want as virtual schools evolve and grow. Indeed, cyber schools are considered a model for the 21 st century.
